Oleoresins

Products

Oleoresins are natural products obtained from plant sources, composed of a resin dissolved in an essential oil. They are commonly extracted from spices and herbs using solvents. Oleoresins capture the full flavor profile of the spice or herb, including both the volatile essential oil components and the non-volatile resinous fractions.

Characteristics of Oleoresins:

Concentration: Oleoresins are highly concentrated forms of the spices and herbs from which they are derived. This makes them more potent than the raw materials. Solubility: They are typically soluble in oil and partly in alcohol but not in water. Stability: Oleoresins often have a longer shelf life compared to their corresponding essential oils due to the presence of non-volatile compounds that can act as natural preservatives.

Extraction Methods:

Solvent Extraction: A common method where solvents like hexane or ethanol are used to dissolve the oleoresin from the plant material.
Supercritical Fluid Extraction: Uses supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent, which is considered more environmentally friendly and can produce a high-quality oleoresin.

Advantages of Oleoresins:

Consistency: They provide a standardized and consistent flavor profile. Efficiency: Smaller quantities are needed to achieve the desired flavor or color, making them cost-effective. Shelf Life: Enhanced stability compared to raw spices and essential oils. Oleoresins are valued in various industries for their concentrated flavors, natural composition, and versatile applications.
